Ignite recently hosted another engaging classroom workshop, this time focusing on “Different Genres” and how to achieve the correct camera settings for each style of photography. The session was designed to help students move beyond simply taking pictures and begin understanding the technical decisions that shape a strong image.
A key part of the workshop was learning about the exposure triangle — aperture, shutter speed, and ISO — and how these three elements work together to control light and influence the final result. Students explored how aperture affects depth of field, how shutter speed can freeze motion or create movement blur, and how ISO impacts brightness and image quality. Understanding this balance is essential for any photographer who wants creative control over their work.
After covering the theory, students were encouraged to put their knowledge into practice. They walked around the school grounds, experimenting with different genres of photography, including portrait, landscape, action, and detail shots. The aim was not only to capture interesting images but also to think carefully about which settings were most appropriate for each genre. For example, using a faster shutter speed for action shots or a wider aperture to create a soft background for portraits.
The hands-on approach gave students the opportunity to test, adjust, and refine their settings in real time. It was fantastic to see them problem-solve, collaborate, and support one another while developing their confidence behind the camera.
The workshop saw a strong turnout, with plenty of enthusiasm from the students. There was a real sense of creativity and curiosity throughout the session, and most importantly, a lot of fun was had by all. Ignite looks forward to hosting more inspiring workshops in the future.
